. Due to repeated revolutions, the United
States

there in 1914. However, in April 1916, the

attempted to overthrow the

Dominican Republic
, and the US landed
marines
at several ports to
repress
internal disorders. A new treaty was requested by the US to collect customs under
American
control
, to appoint a financial
advisor
and to
establish
a peace-keeping
force
officered by Americans. The new
president
of the
Dominican Republic
refused to agree to these
conditions
as they violated
Dominican
sovereignty
. In retaliation, the US refused to
turn
over to the
Dominican
government
its
share
of the customs revenues and in November 1916 announced that the Domminican
Republic
was under United
States
military
administration
. There was great resentment against this US military rule, but the
American
occupation
forces remained until September 1924, when the
Dominican Republic
adopted a new
constitution
