a country officially known as the Dominican Republic occupying the eastern part of the island of Hispaniola in the West Indies. Due to repeated revolutions, the United States established a provisional government there in 1914. However, in April 1916, the Dominican Republic minister of war attempted to overthrow the president of the Dominican Republic, and the US landed marines at several ports to repress internal disorders. A new treaty was requested by the US to collect customs under American control, to appoint a financial advisor and to establish a peace-keeping force officered by Americans. The new president of the Dominican Republic refused to agree to these conditions as they violated Dominican sovereignty. In retaliation, the US refused to turn over to the Dominican government its share of the customs revenues and in November 1916 announced that the Domminican Republic was under United States military administration.
