Richard Wagner (1813-1883) German musical theorist and dramatic composer whose work had a revolutionary influence on Western music. Wagner wrote and performed numerous operas among which are Der fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman) and Gotterdammerung (Twilight of the Gods).
