during World War II (1939-1945), Germany's campaign to capture the Russian industrial city of Stalingrad. The Germans attacked Stalingrad in August 1942 and a battle ensued, lasting for several months. The German army lost 300,000 soldiers, 90,000 of which were captured. The battle ended the Nazi advance into Russia and was the turning point of the fighting between the two countries.
