a coined variation of the phrase rise through the ranks, meaning to work one's way up from the bottom to the top in an organization, group, society, etc. This phrase was originally used to describe a military officer who had achieved the rare accomplishment of working his way up from the rank of private to a high position. It began to be applied to nonmilitary advances in the mid-1800s.
