a felt-tipped marking pen or marker that is used for such things as drawings, lettering, large charts, artwork, etc. Originating in Japan, the first such pens were made from bamboo with a felt tip. The first commercial marking pens, however, were not put on the market until the mid-1960s, and were commonly used for drawing charts, addressing boxes, making temporary signs and so on.
