work of three volumes, 2,659 pages and 160 illustrations came out in 1771. The famous eleventh edition, published in 1910-1911, had more than 40,000 separate articles, including many new entries and many that provided historical detail. This edition also became well known for its literary writing
style. The fifteenth edition, published in 1974 and updated each year, had more than 4,000 contributing authors from some 100 countries.
