reference to the civil war in the Dominican Republic (a country on an island in the West Indies) when began in 1965, when a military group seized control of the government. This group reportedly called for American support to help fight leftist rebels, and 14,000 American troops were sent to the Dominican Republic to protect US interests and prevent a Communist takeover by fighting against the rebels. The war ended in 1966, with the swearing in of a new president.
