a reference to a passenger vehicle made by Commercial Cars Ltd., a company established in 1905 in London, England, and later called Commer Cars Ltd. Originally designing and producing large trucks for carrying heavy loads, the company soon went into passenger models and their vehicles became a success both in England and the United States. In the 1970s, the company was bought by the Chrysler Corporation, an American automotive manufacturer, and the Commer name was discontinued.
