On festive
occasions, to add further excitement to the activities, live
birds (such as blackbirds) would be imprisoned in a pie after the pie crust was
baked so once the pie was
cut the
birds would fly forth. (Blackbird is the name
given to various
birds of which the males are largely or entirely black.)
