The origin of this phrase is unknown. 2. a coined variation of drive up the wall, meaning to make someone extremely annoyed, angry, upset, etc.; to greatly frustrate (to the point of insanity, or nearly so). Drive up the wall alludes to a person climbing up and over a wall to escape from a pest.
