1. new recruits become swampers (deck), cleaners (Stewards Dept), and wipers (Engine Room). (FO 748) 2. in the engine room they are not mechanics or apprentice motormen. They are wipers. This means they clean up all spills, drips, puddles, clean and polish the engine room. (FO 3290)
