WEBSTER, NOAH

(1758 - 1843) American educator and author, best known for his American Dictionary of the English Language (1828) and a spelling book called the Blue-Backed Speller. A number of widely used dictionaries, of varying scope and quality, still bear Webster's name. See also dictionary in this glossary.
