reference to an ancient raised roadway built between the city of
Tyre, on an island off the
coast of what became modern-
day Lebanon, and the mainland. In 332 B.C.,
Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) attacked
Tyre but was unable to capture it by
sea. He ordered a causeway be built out from the mainland to the island converting it to a peninsula and the Tyrians finally surrendered.
