a district in South Africa, south of Johannesburg that was the site of violent riots in 1960. During demonstrations organized by the Pan-Africanist Congress (an organization dedicated to the abolishment of apartheid) in their effort to take initiative and leadership of the anti-apartheid movement, police opened fire on demonstrators in a panic reaction resulting in more than sixty dead and many more wounded. Shortly after the demonstration the government banned PAC.
