a reference to a series of protest rallies against the Vietnam war, which occurred across the United States during the summer of 1970. The protests were initiated when the United States escalated the war by sending troops into Cambodia. It was during one of these protests at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio that two men and two women were killed and eight others were wounded by National Guard troops sent there to keep the rally under control.
