a major Hollywood motion-picture production company originally founded in 1912 as the Universal Film Manufacturing Co., and which later became Universal Studios. In the 1920s, the company was one of the leading producers of film serials and in the 1930s produced many popular horror films. In the mid-1960s in addition to its motion picture production, Universal became a leading producer of television series. It's base, Universal City, located in California, is the largest film studio in the world and has become a popular tourist attraction where visitors pay to take tours of the sets of motion pictures, television shows, and action exhibits based on movies.
