- Studying Introduction (18 June 64) a former photographic
firm, started in 1882 by brothers Elmer and Bert E. Underwood. Elmer traveled throughout the
world taking photographs of royalty, famous personalities and
major new events, and is credited by many as
having introduced the first
news pictures. Within two years of the
company's formation, Underwood and Underwood had extended its activities to the
Pacific coast. In 1886 an
office was opened in Baltimore, followed by others in
New York,
Chicago, Toronto and other foreign countries. By 1901 the
firm was
producing 25,000 photos a
day, and it continued in
business into the 1980s. I used to take
pictures for Underwood and Underwood.
