P for pints, and Q for quarts. As 1 quart is equal to 2 pints, it was important that the person, in marking the
board, be mindful as he could end up paying much more than he planned by accidentally marking quarts instead of pints. It was also considered very bad manners to cheat, and thus drinkers had to make sure they correctly noted their p's and q's.
