Suleiman I (ca 1496-1566),
sultan of the
Turkish Empire. He is generally considered the greatest of the sultans, under whom the
Turkish Empire reached its height. His military, educational and
legal reforms earned him the name "Suleiman the Lawgiver." He was fond of
pomp and splendor, and was a lavish patron of the arts and of literature. See also
