company founded in 1859 and which became one of the largest railways in the nation. By 1941 it had more than 13,000 miles of
track, but shortly thereafter the
company gradually contracted. By 1970 the days of Santa Fe's famous passenger trains such as the
Super Chief were largely over, its passenger
services were sold, and it was purchased by another
company in the
late twentieth century.
