RUBBER BURNING (OR SMOKING)

a reference to scorching the tires of an automobile by slamming on the brakes and causing the tires to rub against the road (thus producing smoke and the smell of burning rubber). This term can be used figuratively in reference to something coming to a sudden stop or halt.
