pen name of internationally known British author
Arthur Sarsfield
Ward (1883?-1959), best known as the creator of the Oriental villain,
Dr. Fu Manchu.
Ward started his writing career as a journalist in the early 1900s. His
interest in the
Far East led him to write a
series of novels featuring the sinister
Dr. Fu Manchu who began as an entirely
self-serving villain and who Rohmer gradually transformed into a dedicated fighter of
communism. Fu Manchu usually failed in his actions due to the ineptitude of his
minions, especially his female (often beautiful) operatives who fell in
love with the
wrong person.
