n.a popular type of shrub native to southern Europe, northern Africa, Asia and Australia, widely used as a hedge plant. The privet, having small green leaves and producing small, white clusters of fragrant flowers, is commonly planted in parks and gardens. It is either cut close and shaped into a hedge, or let to grow into a large bush (sometimes up to 15 feet [4.5m] tall).
