a reference to Pithecanthropus erectus, the scientific name for an early primate, thought to have been an ancient ancestor to man. Fossil remains of Pithecanthropus erectus were discovered on the island of Java in Indonesia in 1891, and are supposedly between 500,000 and 1,000,000 years old.
