(1916-) Eldred Gregory Peck,
American motion-
picture star. Originally a
success on
stage in the 1940s, he went on to
star in more than 50 films and frequently played an honest, likable
man who demonstrated high
moral qualities, physical strength,
intelligence and sincerity. A number of his movies dealt with controversial subjects, like Pork
Chop Hill (1959), which he
co-produced as well as starred in, exposing the futility and irony of
war and On the Beach (1959) which dealt with the
potential devastation of atomic warfare.
