the trademark and advertising symbol for Planter's Peanuts, a brand of peanuts produced by the American Planters Nut and Chocolate Company. Mr. Peanut, was peanut-shaped, with a face, arms and legs, normally depicted wearing a top hat and monocle and leaning on a cane. He was created in 1916 by a fourteen-year-old boy when the company held a competition to create a new trademark. He soon appeared in numerous advertisements and in comic strips, and his likeness was made into various toys and gadgets.
