(Greek mythology) a jar-like vessel containing all the evils of the world and given to the first mortal woman, Pandora. Pandora was created by the gods and given various qualities, such as beauty, grace, intelligence, persuasion and feminine skills. When she was sent by the gods to Earth, she brought with her a vessel that contained all human ills and evils. Even though she had been told not to open the jar, she secretly removed the lid and all the evils of the world then escaped and afflicted the world.
