a Untied States railroad company formed in 1853 through the consolidation of ten small railroads in the state of New York. By 1930, it had grown into one of the nation's leading railroads, connecting the East Coast cities with those in the Midwest. In the late 1960s, following years of declining business, the New York Central Railroad unsuccessfully merged with several other railroads and went into bankruptcy.
