Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), French military leader. He rose to power in France by military force, declared himself emperor and conducted campaigns of conquest across Europe until his final defeat by armies allied against him in 1815. Well-known, even stellar, examples of such a personality are, of course, Napoleon and Hitler.Napoleon Bonaparte (1769@1821), Emperor of the French (1804@ 1814 and 1815). He rose to power in France by military force, declared himself emperor, and conducted campaigns of conquest across Europe. By 1812, most of Europe was under Napoleon's control. At this point, however, he attempted to invade Russia, in violation of a treaty he had made with them earlier. The invasion was a failure which drained Napoleon's resources and ended in defeat. The other countries he had been holding in check rose up against him, and Napoleon abdicated in April 1814. He was exiled to the Italian island of Elba, but escaped in March 1815 and reestablished himself, with the help of supporters in France, as emperor. The other European countries again allied against him, and Napoleon was decisively defeated in June of 1815. He was sent into permanent exile on the island of Saint Helena, off the west coast of Africa.
