(1904-1981) American actor and director who established himself as a Broadway performer and as a popular leading man in motion pictures. He starred in several movies including Untamed (1929), Inspiration (1931) and Night Must Fall (1937). In 1941 he joined the United States Naval Reserve and was assigned to set up a naval operations room in the White House (the official residence of the president of the United States) in Washington, DC. He later commanded a small war vessel in the Pacific and served on a naval destroyer. He returned to Hollywood after the war.
