Geology is the scientific study of the earth's substance, physical structure and the forces affecting its appearance and development, as well as the history of life forms (living or extinct) as recorded in rocks. In geology, different spans of time in earth's history are divided into chronological periods according to major physical changes in the earth such as the redistribution of land and sea and the forming of new mountain ranges.
