telling improbable tales, sometimes in
order to impress or
surprise; going beyond the limits of
truth. A
longbow is a large powerful bow, sometimes over 6 feet (1.8m) long, drawn by the
hand and used to
shoot long, feathered arrows with great accuracy and
range. Such bows were used by
English archers as their
principal weapon from the twelfth century until the invention of guns. It was said that a good archer could propel his arrow a mile and could
shoot an arrow between the fingers of a
man's
hand at a considerable distance. The seemingly incredible tales told about
longbow exploits, as those appearing in stories of the
legendary English outlaw
Robin Hood, gave
rise to this expression.
