an allusion to the scabbard (and therefore the sword) worn by Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888 - 1935), who became world famous as Lawrence of Arabia. A British soldier and writer, and one of the most adventurous personalities of World War I, Lawrence helped organize the Arab revolt against Turkey, winning success as a leader of daring guerrilla raids. A scabbard is a case or sheath for a rifle, machine gun, or the like, usually made of leather or hide, bound with metal. Scabbard can also refer to the sheath or case that is used to protect the blade of a sword, bayonet or dagger when not in use.
