an
American telecommunications
company, established in 1920 initially in the
Caribbean. The
company expanded internationally and soon became a
major telecommunications manufacturer. Throughout the mid-1900s, ITT, as it was most commonly known, acquired more than 250 other companies, including hotels,
insurance companies and Caesars
World, Inc. (a casino
operations company). In 1995 the
corporation divided into three separate companies; one consisting of
insurance companies, one of hotels and buildings and one of
electronics and automotive parts companies.
