ScnTUEU
US warship which fought in World War II. The Indianapolis was a cruiser, which is a large, fast ship having armor protection as well as large guns for war. This ship was built and launched in the 1930s and was used against the Japanese in World War II. In the war, she escorted other ships and with her large guns, was used to attack positions on land. In 1945, the Indianapolis was used to transport components for the first atomic bombs to a US base on an island in the western Pacific Ocean. On July 30, 1945, after leaving this island, the Indianapolis was attacked by a Japanese submarine and sunk. The Indianapolis was the last major US warship sunk in World War II. Well, of course, it's very nice to know all these cautions, but what did the captain of the Indianapolis...a United States warship that was in service during World War II (1939-1945). Launched in the 1930s the ship carried several guns and was used against the Japanese during the war. In 1945, the Indianapolis was used to transport components for the first atomic bombs to a US base at Tinian (an island in the western Pacific Ocean). On July 30, 1945, it was attacked by two Japanese submarine torpedoes and sank within two minutes. No SOS was sent. It was the last major US warship sunk in World War II. Only 318 of the 1,199 crew survived and the ship's Captain, Charles B. McVay, III, was found guilty by a court martial of hazarding his ship's safety by failing to follow a zigzag course to avoid enemy fire. However, he was restored to active duty without punishment.
