slow to comprehend or understand; slow to think, respond or react to something. The phrase slow on the draw originated with the gunfighters of the American West. (Draw literally means to remove a gun from its holster-for the purpose of firing it.) Those who were slow on the draw in a gunfight were more likely to lose and thus be killed.
