George Armstrong Custer (1839?1876), American army officer who distinguished himself as a cavalry commander during the American Civil War. Thereafter, he served on the frontier with the Seventh Cavalry Regiment, engaged in patrol duty and Indian fighting. Custer and the more than two hundred men in his command were killed in the battle of Little Bighorn. See also Little Bighorn in this glossary.
