n.an inquiry initiated by Congress (the supreme lawmaking body of the United States), to investigate governmental affairs, executive actions or public and private wrongdoing, and which may lead to new laws. Such investigations, carried out by Congress as a body or by appointed committees, have been launched to uncover scandals, spotlight certain issues, or advance the repute of the committee members themselves.
