type of article other than straight news usually included in a newspaper. A columnist is entitled to use his byline as authority, he needs not name source. Does not necessarily express opinion or party line of paper, but can compliment or amplify it. A column should be public service journalism (to inform the public, expose rotten spots, act as an opinion leader, form a viewpoint for all).
