a greased cloth or
canvas mat which is pressed against the outside of a
vessel to
block up a hole and
prevent the
vessel from sinking. It is lowered over the side by ropes, and the
pressure of the
sea itself keeps the mat in
place. The boat or
ship can then be pumped out and the leak repaired from inside.
