Chevalier began in show business as an acrobat at a young age and later switched to singing in Paris caf?s and music halls. In 1908, he appeared in the first French silent films, and then returned to the stage, where he gained international fame wearing his trademark straw hat and bow tie. His American motionpicture debut came in 1929 in the musical Innocents of Paris. Between 1929 and 1935, he starred in eleven other American film musicals.
