1) the introduction of protective gloves for each contestant; 2) rounds of three
minutes followed by 1 minute of rest; and 3) ending the bout if a contestant fell and could not
rise to his feet within 10 seconds to
resume the fight. In such a
case, the downed fighter was declared "knocked out" and the
standing fighter won. These became known as the Marquis of Queensberry Rules, or Queensberry Rules, and came to govern both amateur and
professional boxing.
