BRADY, MATHEW

BRADY, MATHEW
ScnTUEU
(1823--1896) American photographer who became one of the first great photographers of American historical subjects. His pictures provide, in many cases, the only visual record of leading people and events of the 1800s. He opened a studio in New York City in 1844, which brought him widespread fame. When the American Civil War (1861--1865) broke out, he hired a team of approximately 100 cameramen who took over 3,500 photographs, both battlefield scenes and portraits of army and camp life. Through his efforts this visual record of the war has been preserved. Among the most famous Brady staff portraits are those of President Abraham Lincoln and Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant.
