n.the very top part of a box containing a commercial
product (such as a breakfast cereal), usually
bearing the
brand name of the
product. Box tops are sometimes used in promotions to attract consumers where a free gift, prize, or reduced-
price item is offered in
exchange for a designated number of box tops or a certain number of box tops with a small amount of
money. In
order to receive the advertised
item, the
consumer must
purchase the
product, tear off the box top(s)-which
acts as proof of
purchase-and
send it (or some other proof of
purchase) in to the manufacturer.
