the main character in the book Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson, An Objectively Impartial Criticism of the Life of Man, by Russian-born mystic and philosopher, George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff (ca. 1872-1949). Beelzebub is a fallen angel who has been exiled to the planet Mars. He subsequently constructs an observatory on Mars, from which he observes the universe and particularly the planet Earth. Beelzebub describes what he sees on the planet and makes comment on the various characteristics and actions of its people.
