1. a gradual breaking down due to friction or erosion. 2. a reduction in strength due to constant stress. 3. the reduction of staff in an organization due to unavoidable circumstances such as old age, retirement, death, etc. 4. a gradual decrease in salary levels paid due to hiring personnel at lower wages than their predecessors. This occurs because new staff do not qualify for the additional wages provided in an incremental payment system due to lack of seniority, proven value, etc.
