This word is formed from acro- used in a combining form to mean height, from Greek akros meaning highest or topmost and the suffix -phobia, also used in a combining form to mean dread or fear. Common examples of acrophobia include the fear of standing at the top of a tall ladder or building, or the fear of flying in an airplane.
